Today I will explain to you the PMI refund policy.
Understanding this policy will help you make an informed decision when you need to cancel the PMP exam and want a refund for any reason.
Let’s dive in.
PMI Refund Policy
So, you have applied for the PMP exam, set your test date, and then life happens. You can no longer attend and want your money back. You need to know the PMP exam fee refund policy.
The PMI PMP exam fee refund policy says:
“To obtain a refund for the PMP credential, you must request PMI at least 30 days before the exam eligibility expiration date. PMI will retain a processing fee of 100 USD if you have not yet scheduled or taken the examination. Also, you can receive a refund, less a 100 USD processing fee, if you fail to meet audit requirements.
After the refund is processed, the application will be closed, and the eligibility period will no longer be valid. If a scheduled exam is canceled and rescheduled outside of 30 days from the date of purchase, up to 48 hours prior to the scheduled testing date, there is a rescheduling fee applied. Within 48 hours of the scheduled testing date, all fees and the ability to reschedule are forfeit.”
Therefore, you can get your money back if you have not yet scheduled the exam and have over 30 days until your PMP exam eligibility expires. However, the PMI will deduct a 100 USD fee.
If you failed the exam, did not show up, or your eligibility period has expired, you will not get a refund. However, in the case of extenuating circumstances, you can receive a full refund.
Additionally, you will get your money back with a deduction of 100 USD if you fail the audit.
You will not get your money back in the following cases:
- Your one-year eligibility period has expired, and you have not scheduled the exam.
- You scheduled the exam but did not attend it and could not provide a proper reason to cancel or reschedule.
- You failed the PMP exam.
Please review the PMP exam fee refund policy in the PMP Handbook for updated information.
If you have already scheduled the exam, a different rule applies. Please read my post on rescheduling or canceling the PMP exam.
Summary
You can get your money back if you have applied for the PMP exam. Take action 30 days before your eligibility expiration date. After receiving the refund, your application will close, and your eligibility will no longer be valid.
I hope now the PMI refund policy is clear.
Have you asked for a refund for your PMP exam? Please share your experience in the comments section.
I am Mohammad Fahad Usmani, B.E. PMP, PMI-RMP. I have been blogging on project management topics since 2011. To date, thousands of professionals have passed the PMP exam using my resources.
I paid for my exam and scheduled a date. I went through a costly divorce and home sale, so I had to reschedule. I cancelled my exam date and requested a refund, but was told I did not qualify. My circumstances are uncommon and I feel that I should be given a refund since PMI performed no service. The no refund policy for performing no service to the customer seems like a very corrupt policy.
Hello Archana, I would recommend you contact PM customer care for this issue.
Hi ,
I had my PMP exam scheduled on August 10th.
I was not allowed to write the exam since the name on my ID was with my initials and the one I have updated on the website was without initials.A case ID was registered on the same by the exam center. But I got a mail stating “NO show STATUS”.When i checked with the customer care they say to repay the entire amount again and re-schedule the exam.
I though I need to pay only the re-examination fee and not the full amount. Can you help me clarify on the same.
My one year eligibility period has expired and i didnt scheduled the exam. i dont want refund, can i schedule exam and use that money as exam fee?
Please contact PMI customer care, usually they give three months extension.
Hi,
I have scheduled my exam on 28Nov18 and my 1 year exam eligibility period ends on 6th Dec’18. Due to personal health reasons, I am unable to concentrate and prepare for the exam. Is it possible to reschedule my exam date for Jan’19 now that my health is gradually improving. Need urgent response from you.
Thanks
Ask PMI customer care, usually they extend the eligibility period for three months. I hope they will do the same for you too.
i have not yet taken any pmp exam date and pmp certification expiry date is dec 2018.
how can i cancel my order of certification i.e.$405 as not getting any option to cancel via https://certification.pmi.org site.
plz guide me as i want money back in my account and has no plan to give this year due to some personal reasons.
You can do so through prometric site.
PMP exam was scheduled on 24th SEptember. I CANCELLED my exam on prometric site on 10th JUly since I was not prepared. I got an email for $0 admin fee from Prometric. will PMI still deduct any $?
I hope you would have known how much has been deducted. I hope it is 70 USD.
My membership ends in 15-august-2018
today I renewed it for one year to postpone the exam, but when I go to exam reschedule page the final date allowed is still 15-august-2018.
is there solution for this problem?
The PMI membership expiry date and exam eligibility expiry date is different.
Hameed the best way would be to cancel the exam without any further delay. Take the refund.
Next step: Submit the application again post August 2018 and pay the fees again. There are chances that you may loose some $100. But its better rather than a lapse of full amount
Hello,
I rescheduled exam several times due to the time limitation. At the end I decided to no go for exam. My eligibility expires on 6th of September, the exam it s scheduled on 4th of September.
On 10th of June I cancel prometric appointment and yesterday I wrote to PMI to make the refund because I didn’t receive the confirmation from Prometric.
They will keep the fee deduction? I will receive something because it s not very clear for me ( it its scheduled already possible to do not receive anything).
Thank you!
Since you cancelled the exam one month before, they will refund you minus a deduction of admin fee.
I have rescheduled my pmp exams twice but due to certain conditions, i dont want to sit for the exams again. Can i get a full refund
No, full refund is not possible. If your exam date is after 30 days, you will get a refund with an administrative fee deduction.
Hi,
I just paid for the PMP exam through PMI website but when i tried to schedule an appointment i did not find any available dates since my eligibility ends in 4 days.
What shall i do now? Can i get a refund or extension of eligibility?
You must contact PMI customer care as soon as possible.
Hi Fahad Usmani,
Thanks for your good explanation on all inquiries.
In case of cancellation within 30 days, I saw in your previous posts you mentioned admin fee of US$ 100 will be charge by PMI. I believe the cancellation fee is only US$ 70. If the admin fee is separately deducted that means a loss of US$ 170 (100+70) in total.
My exam is scheduled for after 3 weeks from now.
How much I will get return from PMI?
405 – 170 or
405 -70??
Let’s wait for the PMI to publish updated handbook. The current handbook provides old information and which I believe is not correct.
I suggest you contact PMI customer care.
Hi,
I paid PMP exam fees on 25-feb-2018 whereas my eligibility expiry date is 19-March-2018. i did not find any seat before expiry of my eligibility date. Now i need to refund my fees. What is procedure to refund exam fees?
Secondly i found a seat on 11-March-2018 in another state which is 1400 KM away from me. Should i schedule appointment there and then cancel to refund fees? which is better option?
and most important nobody explained procedure how to refund it when you did not scheduled any exam, please explain.
I think you can ask PMI customer care to extend your eligibility period citing your issues. They have done it many times in the past.
If you want your refund and you did not schedule the exam, you will have to send them an email.
Brother Fahad,
I saw in your previous posts you mentioned admin fee of US$ 100. May i know where is this fee mentioned in the PMI Handbook? Also, i believe the cancellation fee is only US$ 70. If the admin fee is separately deducted then that means a loss of US$ 170 (100+70)!
My question is will PMI refund the full US$ 405 after i pay the cancellation fee and in how many days will i get the refund?. My exam is scheduled for after 2 weeks from now.
I have already sent PMI customer care an email, however there hasn’t been any response yet.
Please refer to the Page:13 of the PMP handbook.
The following text is copied from there:
“To obtain a refund for the PMP certification, you must make a request to PMI at least 30 days before the exam eligibility expiration date. PMI will retain a processing fee of US$100 if you have not yet scheduled or taken the examination. After the refund is processed the application will be closed and the eligibility period will no longer be valid.”
Hi All,
My exam is scheduled on March 24, As of today 18th Feb I fall in 34-35 days window from due date.
Due to project and constant travel I have to cancel my exam date and take at later date not finalized yet.
So my ask:
1. Will I get full refund since i have cancelled the exam 34 days before due date and not in within 30 day window.
2. Whom should i follow from refund standpoint – PMI or Prometric ( PMI is right contact)
3. I have 289 days to sit for my exam and have 3 attempts, What would happen if i do not exam in 289 days?
Your inputs will be highly appreciated.
Regards,
Rohan Panade
You will get full fee minus 100 USD. Once you cancel the schedule you will receive an email with further information.
If you do not pass the exam in one year, you cannot apply for the next one year.
Hi Fahad,
I have just today cancelled my exam before 30 days prior to exam day. What I got from previous answers on this page, I will be charged for 100 USD due to admin fees which was not explained in PMI website. As I got membership of PMI for one year and my eligibility will end in December 2018, I think cancellation of my exam date was not the best option I did as I said PMI dose not well explain this deduction in their website. So do you think I can contact PMI and asking them to re-schedule my exam date instead of cancellation to not pay that 100 USD admin fee? Or if I schedule all by myself a new date (After it’s cancelled now), may I not get charged for that amount (100 USD)? I intend to go taking the exam this year before ending my eligibility period!
Please give me your idea,
Thanks
As per my understanding, since you have cancelled the exam, this fee is not refundable. Though, I would recommend you contact PMI customer care asap. I hope some solution will come out for you.
I’ve scheduled my exam on 27th december and I wanted to cancel it now (more than 30 days). How much would I get if I cancel and what should I do?
Do you want your money back or want to reschedule your exam?
eligibility expires on 07 Jan 2018 and I do not want to take any exam prior to that. How can I book an exam after 7 Jan 2018? Do I have to resubmit my application. I have not paid any money to PMI yet. Thank you
You can contact PMI customer care. Usually they give three months extension period.
Hi , I paid my PMP exam through credit card. I cancelled it later (31 days prior to exam) . It’s been 1 month now and still I didn’t get my money back. So, how many days it will take to get my refund?
I suggest you contact PMI customer care.
HI , did you get your refund back ? If so how long did it take ? Did you have to contact customer care ?
Hi, I understand that PMI will deduct $100 for processing fee as it is applied before 30 days of exam expiry date.
If I withdraw my money now, will I be able to schedule the exam again or I have to submit the new application too.
Within one year, you can apply again with the same application.
Since you did not schedule the exam you will get your money after admin fee deduction. Regarding the second query, please contact PMI customer care.
Hi,
Please i need your guidance in my situation.

You want to cancel the exam or reschedule it?
Sir,
My PMI application was approved in Oct 14. My application was to expire on 31 Oct 15. I did my payment to schedule exam on 25 Sep 15. However, it has been selected for audit and remark says that i can schedule exam post successful audit for 01 year. what happens to my eligibility and whether my fees will be forfeited. Will this means I’ll get one year eligibility from the time my application audit was successful and I can then schedule the date? OR Will it still show Oct 2015 after successful audit?
Can I cancel my payment in order to avoid fee forfeit. Please suggest. Thank you in advance. My audit deadline is 24 Dec 15. Looking for a prompt response
Your eligibility period will start after the completion of your audit. After the audit you will be able to schedule the exam.
If you don’t want to proceed any further, you can cancel it and get your money back with nominal service fee deduction.
Hi,
On the day of exam I met with an accident and couldn’t attend the exam, on medical ground, will I be able to re-schedule my exam date again?
I believe yes. On medical ground you can do so. Just contact PMI customer care with all documents.
Hello Fahad,
I had submitted my application and received approval. I planned to pay the fee to schedule the exam date two days back. I payed the fee and only seconds later it showed in RED that my application has been selected for auditing. What will happen to the fee paid? Initially, it showed application will expire in Aug 2015 but now it says “Note: You must complete the audit process to take your exam.
Your Audit Deadline is 02 Jul 2015. ”
Will this means I’ll get one year eligibility from the time my application audit was successful and I can then schedule the date? OR Will it still show Aug 2015 after successful audit?
Can I cancel my payment in order to avoid fee forfeit. Please suggest. Thank you in advance.
Sorry Pooja, I just saw your comment, and it is now too late for a proper reply. I see that you audit deadline is passed. Are you still having any question? If yes, please let me know.
For the written request, is there such form or document format we should send it as? What is the mailing address to be sent to them?
Hello Khalid, before sending any document, clarify with them.
I have scheduled my Exam on 8th Sept ’14 and Due to some personal commitments and Sister’s Wedding in Between, I know i wont get enough time to prepare and I decided to cancel my exam. and i cancelled it on 5th August’14 . so i have done it ahead of the 30 day window. The question is will i be refunded with the entire amount $405 or will they deduct money ? How long does it usually take for the money to be refunded?
Thanks,
Ranjith
Since you have cancelled your exam before one month, you will get full refund. I suggest you wait for at-least four weeks to get your money back, or you can contact PMI customer care.
Dear Fahad
You mean if we schedule the exam and cancel it before 1 month then we will get full refund,
but if we do not schedule, then PMI will deduct 100$?
am I correct?
Before one month, no deduction.
If you reschedule or cancel the exam within 30 days, you will have to pay 70 USD, and if you want to cancel or reschedule the exam within 2 days, you will lose all your money.
So does this mean if I cancelled my exam within 30 days I will get a refund? (I understand I have to pay 70$) in this case what is the amount of the refund? and should I also submit written request?
You can do so online through prometric site.
I am trying to cancel my appointment. Which is in 4 days time. But in the prometric website it is asking me to pay 70$ to cancel the exam. Should i pay the 70$ to prometric and then inform pmp for a refund? Is that how it works? And how much will they deduct in my case.
Do it immediately otherwise you will lose all. The money will be in your account, you can schedule the exam again after paying the difference.
Hi fahad I need your help actually I want to cancel my exam and I am already in 30 day window frame my scheduled date is 15th may.if I pay 70$ will I get my exam fee refunded.if yes then how much refund I will get approximately.
Thanks
Vaibhav
You may not get the refund as you are in 30 window period.
Contact PMI customer care for further clarification.
