If you want to become a CAPM, the first question that may come to your mind is how much it will cost you.
This is a simple question but the answer might be complex.
In fact, how much money you may need to spend on the CAPM certification depends on you and your experience. However, I can give you a general idea about the approximate cost to obtain this certification.
Okay, let’s get started.
If you have at least 1,500 hours of project management experience, this cost is not applicable to you and you can apply for the CAPM exam without attending any training.
However, if you don’t have project management work experience or just passed out, you must attend a 23 contact hours training program in project management. This is a mandatory requirement.
If you start looking for a CAPM 23 contact hours training program, you will find that there are very few training providers who provide the 23 contact hours for the CAPM certification exam.
If you are looking for the CAPM training program with the lowest cost, you can visit the below given course. The cost of this course is 99.50 USD.
However, I will suggest that you join any 35 contact hours training program for the PMP certification exam and then apply for the CAPM exam. If in the future you decide to write the PMP certification exam, you can use these 35 contacts hours to apply for it.
The cost of a 35 contact hours training program varies from 199 USD to 4,000 USD.
PMI Membership Fee
This is an optional investment. It is your call to join the PMI or not.
However, I would recommend you join the PMI before applying for the exam. This membership offers you immense benefits.
If you are a PMI member the cost of the CAPM certification exam is 225 USD, and if not it is 300 USD.
If you fail the exam in your first attempt, you have two more attempts. The re-examination fee is 150 USD for PMI members and 200 USD for non-members.
The book costs include the cost of the PMP reference books that you will need to study for the CAPM exam.
The first book is the PMBOK Guide. You must study this book to understand the project management process flow. Moreover, the CAPM exam is based on this guide, so read this guide as many times as you can.
If you are a PMI member, this guide is free for you; otherwise, you will have to buy it. The cost of the PMBOK Guide on Amazon is 37.39 USD.
There are also various CAPM exam reference books available in the market which will help you to study for the examination.
One of the most famous books for the CAPM exam is Rita Mulcahy’s CAPM exam preparation book. The cost of this book is 58.22 USD.
I recommend you refer to at least two good CAPM exam reference books. This will cost you about 100 USD.
I have seen many people not referring to the PMBOK Guide. They find it too dry, and instead based their preparation on reference books and training materials.
I wouldn’t suggest you do this. If you do so, you will face problems in the exam.
I know that the PMBOK Guide may look boring but believe me, once you start understanding it, you will enjoy it.
Currently, there are very few training providers that are offering the CAPM simulator. The most well-known training provider is from RMC Project, founded by Rita Mulcahy.
You can buy this simulator and practice some questions. The cost of this simulator is 199 USD.
The other costs include the money that you may spend to buy optional materials. For example, you can buy flashcards, iPhone or android applications, formula guides, etc.
I will not give you the cost estimate for this section as the choices are too many and you may or may not spend money here.
The other costs also include the cost of traveling, lodging, and food. I am also not including these expenses as it depends on your location and your choice. For example, if live classroom training programs are not available in your area, you can do an online training program and avoid the cost of traveling, lodging, and food.
Now it’s time to have a look at the total cost that you may spend on this process:
So, if you have experience in project management, the cost may vary from 519 USD to 828 USD.
However, if you don’t have experience in project management, the cost may vary from 619 USD to 828 USD.
You may have noticed that there is not much difference between the minimum cost and the maximum cost. This is because the demand for the CAPM exam is low and market focused towards the PMP exam.
Also, I have avoided the cost of live classroom training programs because I personally recommend that you shouldn’t invest in any costly training for the CAPM certification. You should save this money and spend on the PMP exam in the future.
The CAPM certification is for professionals interested in growing their career in project management. Since this is an entry level certificate, I do not suggest you spend too much on it. Pass the CAPM exam, get some experience, and then apply for the PMP exam which is more valued, highly regarded and offers you many more benefits.
Please note that the cost of the certification may go up or down depending on your preferences. The estimation given here is just for your rough idea.
