Today, I will talk about the CAPM exam structure.
Many future Project Management Associates ask: What is the CAPM Exam Structure? How is it laid out? What should I expect during the test?
The CAPM (Certified Associate in Project Management) certification is the most popular project management credential for professionals with little or no experience. It validates your knowledge and understanding of project management terms.
This certification establishes your credibility by showing you have undergone a rigorous training process and computer-based exam to earn it. Once you pass this test, you are a CAPM.
As you prepare for the CAPM, it is helpful to understand the structure of the CAPM exam.
The test comprises multiple-choice questions with no negative marking. In other words, it does not deduct points for wrong answers, so there’s no penalty for guessing.
CAPM Exam Structure
The CAPM exam has 150 questions, of which 15 are pretest questions. The marks for these pretest questions will not be added to your total score. These 15 questions are randomly inserted, and you cannot differentiate these questions from real ones. These are used to test the validity of future examinations.
The exam lasts three hours, with no scheduled breaks. If you pause for a few moments, the clock will continue to tick. Prepare to be seated for the duration.
Breaks are not allowed during the online proctored test for any reason. Leaving your desk will terminate the exam. Eating, drinking, smoking, and chewing gum are prohibited during exams.
Now, let’s focus on the CAPM exam structure.
Exam Format
- Computer-based Test: The CAPM exam is administered electronically.
- Multiple-choice Questions: The primary question format consists of multiple-choice options.
- Drag-and-drop Questions: Some questions may require you to drag and drop elements into their correct positions.
- Animations/comic Strips: Visual aids like animations and comic strips may be used to present scenarios.
Number of Questions and Time Limit
- Total Questions: 150
- Pretest Questions: 15 (These questions do not contribute to your final score)
- Time Limit: 3 hours
- Break: A 10-minute break is allowed after answering the first 75 questions.
Exam Domains and Weightings
The CAPM exam covers four key domains, each with its weight:
- Project Management Fundamentals and Core Concepts: This includes project initiation, planning, execution, monitoring and control, and closing. The weightage of this domain is 36%.
- Predictive, Plan-Based Methodologies: This domain focuses on traditional project management approaches like Waterfall. Its weightage is 17%.
- Agile Frameworks and Methodologies: Covers agile methodologies like Scrum and Kanban. Its weightage is 20%.
- Business Analysis Frameworks: This section explores business analysis techniques and their role in project management. Its weightage is 27%.
Language Aids
If English is not your first language, the CAPM exam is available in 13 languages at no additional cost.
Exam Mode
The CAPM exam is available in two modes:
- Online Proctored Exam: This option allows you to take the exam from the comfort of your home or office. The exam is proctored remotely to ensure the integrity of the testing process.
- Test Center Exam: You can also take the exam at an authorized Pearson VUE test center. This option provides a more traditional exam-taking environment.
The CAPM Exam
You will watch a fifteen-minute tutorial session before the test. This will explain how the test process works and how to navigate the exam environment, such as selecting an answer and marking a question for later review.
Once you finish the tutorial, your test will start. Please note that you cannot make any notes with you during the tutorial or test for proctored-based tests. For a center-based test, you can make notes during the exam.
After you complete all the questions and submit your answers, you will be asked to fill out a survey, and then you can see your results. The tutorial and the survey duration are not added to your three hours of exam time.
Re-examination and Validity
If you do not pass the CAPM exam on your first attempt, you are allowed up to two additional retakes within the one-year eligibility period. The CAPM certification is valid for five years, after which you must either retake the exam or earn 15 professional development units (PDUs) to maintain your certification.
Summary
The CAPM exam has 150 questions distributed across the four domains. Understanding the CAPM exam structure and dedicating time to effective preparation can increase your confidence and improve your chances of getting a good certification.
Good luck with your CAPM exam.
