PMP Exam Breaks: Rules, Tips, and Duration Explained

Fahad Usmani, PMP

Many PMP aspirants ask: “Can I take breaks during my PMP exam?” The short answer is yes—but only during the two scheduled optional 10-minute breaks. These pauses let you recharge without the clock ticking.

In this blog post, I’ll share the full PMP exam break policy, differences for test centers and online exams, and pro tips from my experience passing in 2010 (and helping thousands since).

Whether you’re testing at a Pearson VUE center or from home via OnVUE, knowing these rules can boost your focus and pass rate.

Ready? Let’s get started.

What is the PMP Exam Format?

As of now, the PMP certification exam has 180 questions and lasts 230 minutes. It’s divided into three parts, and you’ll have the chance to take one scheduled 10-minute break after completing the first two sections.

The exam is conducted at Pearson VUE test centers or online through OnVUE. It includes multiple-choice, drag-and-drop, and matching-type questions.

PMP Exam Breaks: When and How They Work

Breaks align with sections:

  • Break 1: After Question 60 (end Section 1).
  • Break 2: After Question 120 (end Section 2).
  • Duration: Up to 10 minutes each (return early if ready).
  • Clock: Frozen—no penalty.
  • Process: Review answers, click “Break,” leave/return. Cannot revisit prior sections.

Center-Based Vs Online Proctored: Key Differences

Pearson VUE Test Center:

  • Complete Freedom: Leave room for the restroom, snack, and walk.
  • Proctor Checks: Show ID out/in; possible metal detector.
  • My Experience: I took two in 2010—refreshed my mind perfectly.

OnVUE Online Proctored:

  • Restricted: Stay in webcam view; quick restroom okay, but no wandering.
  • Rules: Proctor approves break; turn off camera briefly if needed. No extra breaks.
  • Tip: Set up the test early, clear the room, and back up the internet.

Choose wisely: Centers for comfort, online for convenience.

Pro Tip: 80% of passers take at least one break to combat fatigue.

Break Rules for Onsite and Online Exams

At Pearson VUE Test Centers

  • You can take the scheduled break and additional ones anytime, but only the scheduled one stops the timer.
  • Each time you leave the room, you must sign out and back in, and your ID may be checked.
  • Metal detector scans are sometimes used for security.

At Home (Online Exam)

  • You can take only the scheduled 10-minute break.
  • Unscheduled breaks aren’t allowed, or your exam may be terminated.
  • You must always remain visible to the webcam.

Strategies for Managing Your Breaks

Here’s how to plan your PMP exam breaks effectively:

  • Use the scheduled break even if you feel fine. It helps refresh your mind.
  • Avoid extra breaks unless necessary. They eat into your time.
  • Drink water before starting to stay hydrated.
  • Practice with mock tests using similar timing to build endurance.
  • Stretch briefly during the 10-minute break to reduce fatigue.

Multiple studies show short breaks can improve attention and learning, and they don’t hurt performance. For example, NIH found that brief rests help the brain consolidate new skills, and classroom trials report better attention and quiz scores with micro-breaks.

My Personal Experience During the PMP Exam

When I took the PMP exam in 2010, it included 200 questions. I took two breaks: one after 100 questions and another after finishing all of them.

Those breaks helped me stay calm and focused. Today, with 180 questions, I still recommend taking a scheduled break to recharge your brain.

Common Mistakes to Avoid

  • Skipping the scheduled break due to stress.
  • Taking too long on unscheduled breaks.
  • Returning late after the 10-minute break (the system locks you out).
  • Drinking too much coffee before the test.

  • How Can I Avoid PMP Audit?

Firstly, you should understand that you cannot avoid a PMP audit, because the selection of a candidate is a random process and only the PMI knows how it works.

    According to the PMI,

“All applications are subject to an audit, although only a percentage of applications are selected for an audit. The selection of an application for audit is random.”

You should not be afraid of an audit, because failing an audit will not sentence you to a life of imprisonment.

However, that does not mean that you should invite the PMI to audit you. I believe there are some red flags, which may trigger selection and make you more prone to an audit. I believe that if you make some mistakes on your PMP application form, this raises a flag, and you may be selected for an audit.
