monday.com vs Jira

Let us start the article with an overview of monday.com.

Features

Interface: On monday.com, you get a simple interface that consists of many features and functionality that enables you to streamline your tasks and projects.

Inside the platform, you can create tasks, assign them to team members, and prioritize tasks so your team members know what needs to be taken care of first. Along with sharing files and starting a conversation, you can find the complete tasks and project management on the platform.

Multiple Views: monday.com gives you a set of viewing options that you can switch and have a look at your data. The views that you get are timeline, boards, charts, calendar, card view, table, Kanban, Gantt chart, etc.

You can shift your task cards easily as it is a drag and drop interface.

Workload: This is one of the features that I love about monday.com. The Workload feature shows how much work your team has on their plate. You can find overloaded and underloaded team members. You can view the workload and redistribute it as needed for better efficiency.

Automation: Speaking of saving time, automation helps us to save a lot of time. Automation is a setting that lets you automate a reaction to an action. It’s an “if-this-then-that” setup.

Integrations: monday.com allows you to integrate with your other applications. It can integrate with third-party applications such as Mailchimp, Slack, Zoom, Outlook, Salesforce, HubSpot, and so many more.

User experience plays a vital role, as it gives us an unbiased review of the product from the existing users. What did they like? What did they not like? What did they think?

I have used Capterra’s reviews in this article. As Capterra is a trustworthy review platform, we can rely on it.

On Capterra, 2453 users have rated Monday.com 4.6 stars out of 5. In a 5 star rating, anything above 4 is considered a good score, so monday.com has a great score. This shows that the majority of users have found monday.com’s software useful and that it has helped them with their businesses.

So on ratings, monday.com has passed the test.

Pricing

monday.com pricing nov21

monday.com is a five-tier plan that includes a free plan where they allow up to two team members.

If you are a team of two, you can make good use of the free plan as it comes with a good set of features, including unlimited boards, unlimited docs, 200+ templates, and application support for iOS and Android mobile phones.

For the other four pricing plans, we have basic, standard, pro, and enterprise, and they come with different sets of features.

As I already mentioned in the pros and cons section, monday.com has a per-group pricing structure.

Rates are per-user rates and the minimum number of users in any of the plans, except for the free plan, is 3.

The above rates (8, 10, and 16 USD) in the basic, standard, and pro plans are applicable for annual subscriptions. If you decide on a monthly subscription, the per month rate increases to 10, 12, and 20 USD per user per month for the basic, standard, and pro plans, respectively.

The minimum expenses that you can expect if you try the basic, standard, and pro plans on a monthly subscription would be 30, 36, and 60 USD per month, respectively.

To find the pricing structure of the enterprise plan, you must contact the monday.com sales team.

Before purchasing any of the plans, you can use the 14-day free trial offer from monday.com. This will allow you to access the platform, use it, and help you decide on whether to buy a subscription or not.

Overview of Jira

jira home nov21

Before we start on Jira, we must discuss Atlassian, Jira’s parent company. Atlassian is an Australian-based software company that develops technologies and software that help organizations. It was founded by two college friends, Mike Cannon-Brookes and Scott Farquhar, in 2002.

The name Jira is derived from Gojira, which is the Japanese name for Godzilla. The name idea came from one of the bug tracker tools called Bugzilla.

Atlassian offers not one but many Jira products. The products are:

  • Jira Software: This is a project management tool best suited for the software industry, and it is an issue-tracking tool.
  • Jira Work Management: This is a work management platform best for non-IT teams.
  • Jira Service Management: This platform is for your service desk support.
  • Jira Align: This platform helps you align your strategy with the execution of your projects.

All products are different, so they have different pricing structures.

In this article, we will compare monday.com with Jira Software.

Jira Software is the market’s leading project management tool for software development teams, which has earned the trust of over 65,000 customers, including businesses like eBay, VISA, Square, and Cisco.

Features

Some of Jira Software’s notable features that you must know are outlined below.

A Kanban Board and the Interface: We know that Kanban Boards give us a clear picture of our tasks. Jira provides to-do lists, in-progress boards, and done boards as a default.

You can rename those boards and add more Kanban Boards. You can shift between tasks through drag-and-dropping.

You can create tasks or issues requiring urgent action and decide board for tasks. You can add an assignee, labels, descriptions, comments, attachments, tags, and subtasks.

This entire interface helps you streamline your big tasks and make management easy.

Roadmaps: As product management teams mostly use roadmaps, few project management software come with this functionality. But Jira has provided this feature so you can plan your project roadway effectively.

Roadmaps help you plan how your process should move and task sequence.

Automation: Automation is one of the strongest weapons of any software, as it takes care of repetitive tasks on its own. Once you set the rules and apply triggers, the tool takes care of the rest. In Jira Software, you can build your own rules.

This results in saving time. Jira’s automation interface is drag-and-drop, so you can easily set your automation. On top of that, it also comes with hundreds of automation templates you can use to get started without creating one from scratch.

Reporting: Jira gives you insights into the progress of your projects. It comes with a dashboard that shows you what you need to see. Your data can be shown with different presentations. Along with reporting, your dashboard allows you to see your activities, projects you are on, and tasks that are assigned to your name, so you never miss what you need to see.

Integrations: Jira allows you to connect with over 3,000 applications for a better working experience.

Ratings

jira rating nov21

4.4 stars out of 5 given by 10,880 users is a great score. The score seems to be low as compared to Monday.com, which was 4.6 but do pay attention to the number of users.

For monday.com, the number of users who rated it on Capterra was 2,453, and for Jira, it was 10,880, which is 5 times more than monday.com.

Pros and Cons

Pros
  • Good user ratings.
  • Has a free plan.
  • Free trial period.
  • Jira software provides a status page.
  • iOS and Android app.
Cons
  • The per-user per-month pricing structure is not very budget-friendly.
  • Steep learning curve.

Pricing

jira pricing nov21

Unlike monday.com, Jira is a four-tier pricing structure that also offers a free plan. But the free plan here allows up to 10 users, unlike monday.com (they have a 2 member limitation).

Jira also offers a 7-day free trial; use the trial before subscribing to any plan.

The other three pricing plans are standard, premium, and enterprise. Enterprise is the highest plan, and you can get this pricing if you contact their team.

The rates of the standard and premium plans (7.50 and 14.50 USD per user per month) are lower than monday.com.

On top of that, they offer a discount on the per-user per month for over 101 users. The per-user rate and the number of users are inversely proportional, which means that at and above 101 users if you add more users to the platform, your per-user per-month rate decreases.

We now have a better understanding of both monday.com and Jira Software. Now let us compare and find the best project management software for your team.

monday.com vs Jira – The Comparison

Features

I have mentioned the features of both monday.com and Jira Software above, where we learned that both options come with a good number of similar features that can help businesses manage their projects effectively. However, Jira Software is designed with software teams in mind, making it a perfect fit for technical teams.

Whereas monday.com is best for non-technical teams, a lot can be done on the platform as it is very customizable.

Features like roadmaps are missing on monday.com, which are available in Jira Software.

Results: If you are a software developer team, I recommend going with Jira Software. But for an individual non-technical user, monday.com is a better option.

User Experience

A platform is of no use if it is difficult to use. So the interface of the software plays an important role here.

Both monday.com and Jira Software come with a drag-and-drop interface for easy customization. Both platforms offer templates for a quick start and have an in-depth knowledge base and guides.

Based on my experience with both the software, here are my thoughts.

For monday.com, I did not need the help of the tour guide or knowledge base. For Jira Software, I did need them, as sometimes it was difficult to understand a particular functionality and I had a tough time navigating to a particular feature.

Results: Based on my user experience, I consider monday.com to be the winner here.

Pricing

We learned about both software’s pricing structures in their respective pricing sections.

monday.com has a per-group per-month pricing structure. The group number starts with 3 and goes on as 5, 10, 15, 20, and so on and so forth.

Jira does not have a per-group pricing structure, it is a per-user structure, which means if you are a team of 6 people, you will pay for only those 6 seats.

If we compare the prices of the two software, Jira’s premium plan is at 14.50 USD per user per month, whereas monday.com’s pro plan, which is equivalent to Jira’s premium plan, is 16 USD per month with the annual plan, or 20 USD per user per month. Clearly, Jira Software’s rates are less than Monday.com in all the plans.

As I mentioned earlier, Jira Software also offers a discount on the per-user rate above 101 users. monday.com provides no such offer.

Another important thing I would mention here is the storage. In monday.com, the storage (from left to right) is 500 MB (for the free plan), 5GB (for the basic plan), 20GB (for the standard plan), 100GB (for the pro plan), and 1000GB (for the enterprise plan).

In Jira Software, storage is limited to 2GB (for the free plan), 250GB (for the standard plan), and unlimited (for the pro and enterprise plans).

Results: Here, the clear winner is Jira Software.

Support

monday.com offers 24/7 customer support with all of its plans, including the free one. Apart from that, for self-help, they have updated their support center with videos, webinars, articles, a knowledge base, and a community forum. They also offer one-on-one training.

In Jira Software, you get community forum support, user guides, and tips. The free plan offers only community forum assistance. In the standard plan, they are available to support you during their business hours. You get 24/7 customer support only on the premium and enterprise plans.

Results: monday.com is the winner here.

Conclusion

Feature-wise, monday.com beats Jira with a 2-1 score.

But I also emphasize that Jira Software is intelligent software, and choosing between two software is very subjective. If I have a software team, I will go with Jira Software as they have designed their platform for teams.

But if I were not a technical team member, I would choose monday.com as it has better features, an intuitive interface, and responsive support.

If pricing is a factor, I will go with Jira Software. Note that Jira Software is not just for technical teams. It can and will help your company save some dollars as well.

As I said, making a software choice is very subjective. Select the platform that fulfills your requirements, is budget-friendly, and can help you in the long run.

Before ending this article, I recommend trying the software and its respective trial plan before spending the money. You can get a free trial for both software, so use it to understand the platform.

I hope this article has helped you choose between two leading project management software.
