What to Bring to the PMP Exam: PMP Exam Day Checklist & Rules

Fahad Usmani, PMP

You’ve prepared for months, and test day is finally here. But one question can make you anxious: What should I bring to the PMP exam?

Let’s go over everything you should know before walking into the test center.

PMP Exam Day Checklist & Rules: What to Bring to the PMP Exam

You can’t bring much into the exam hall. The testing rules are strict for security reasons.

You’re allowed to take:

  • A valid ID (passport, driver’s license, or national ID)
  • Your locker key (provided by the test center staff)

That’s it.

Before entering the exam room, you’ll complete a check-in process. The staff will ask you to store all personal items—wallets, phones, pens, watches, and even water bottles—in a locker.

Once you’ve locked them away, you’ll carry only your ID and locker key inside.

Accepted Forms of ID

Make sure your identification matches the name on your PMI profile exactly. Accepted IDs include:

  • National identity card
  • Driver’s license
  • Passport (required for non-citizens in some countries)

For example, in Kuwait, only a passport is accepted for non-citizens. Even if you carry your driver’s license and national ID, the test center may deny entry without a passport.

To avoid stress on exam day, call your Pearson VUE center a few days before your test and confirm which IDs they accept. You can find contact details on the official PMI test-center page.

What the Test Center Provides

Once you’re checked in, the staff will give you:

  • Scratch paper or an erasable note board
  • A pencil or marker
  • A calculator (if the system allows manual calculation)
  • Earplugs to block noise

You can’t bring your own stationery or calculator. Everything you need will be available in the exam room.

Security and Check-In Process

Expect tight security when entering the PMP exam hall.

Here’s what usually happens:

  • You’ll show your ID for verification.
  • The staff will check your pockets and sleeves.
  • You’ll pass through a metal detector.
  • Your photo will be taken for verification.
  • You’ll receive a locker key and be guided to your seat.

Don’t worry—this process is standard worldwide and ensures fairness for all candidates.

During the Exam

You can raise your hand if you need assistance or a new paper. Breaks are limited and monitored, so plan.

If you take an optional break, you can’t use your phone or study materials during that time. You’ll also need to go through the check-in process again before re-entering.

After the Exam

When your test ends, return all provided materials. The staff will collect your paper and calculator before you retrieve your belongings from the locker.

You’ll see your preliminary results on the screen within a few minutes. An official score report will be sent to your PMI account.
